The resort is named after Martin Quinn, an Irish immigrant and miner who discovered the land while traveling the river. Witnessing Native Americans gathering near the steaming water on the mountainside outcrop, he quickly staked his claim and built bathhouses, accommodation, and a house for guests.
Martin’s union with Fannie, an English noblewoman and cousin of African explorer Cecil Rhodes, brought a unique blend of rough charm and refined hospitality to the resort. Together, they welcomed and hosted visitors to the hot springs, creating a captivating and inviting atmosphere.
However, tragedy struck when Fannie passed away from influenza in 1919, leaving Martin distraught. He temporarily left the resort to seek his fortunes in Texas oil, but upon his return, the resort had lost the vibrant life and glamor that Fannie had brought to it. Martin eventually passed away from a stroke in 1932.
In the following years, the resort found new caretakers in Minnie’s two sons, Jack and Dick Harwood.
