Driving Directions to Fern & shadow falls

Getting to the Fern and Shadow Falls trailhead can be a bit confusing, especially with various routes suggested by Google Maps, most of which we’re closed. This added to the confusion.

Keep a close eye out for signs indicating the way to the falls. These signs will serve as your guide in navigating the backroads and ensuring you’re on the right track.

There is also no cell service in this forest, so be prepared and bring along printed maps or physical directions to navigate accurately.

To reach the Fern and Shadow Falls Hike, follow these directions:

Start by taking exit #43 (Kingston) from I-90. Head north on FH9 for approximately 23 miles, passing Prichard. After Prichard, the road will become FR 208. Continue on this road for about 14 miles. Look for FR2367, known as Beetle Creek Road, which is marked with signs for Fern/Shadow Falls. Turn onto FR2367 and follow the signs directing you to Shadow Falls. The trailhead is approximately 4.5 miles from the turn-off on FR2367.

Please be aware that the road leading to the trailhead is rough and rugged, especially the last 3 miles, so it is strongly recommended to have a vehicle with high ground clearance to navigate the terrain safely.

Additionally, the road was incredibly overgrown. Since we were traveling in a sizable truck and wanted to avoid countless pinstripes, we took out our tree clippers to clear the path of large branches along the way.

Best Time To Visit Fern and Shadow Falls

Spring: is the optimal time to witness the falls in their full glory. The increased snow run-off during this season ensures a robust flow of water, enhancing the beauty and power of both Fern and Shadow Falls. The surrounding foliage is vibrant and lush, adding to the picturesque setting. Springtime also provides a cooler and more comfortable hiking experience, with moderate temperatures.

Summer: is the next best time to visit the falls. While the water flow may decrease compared to spring, the weather is generally warm and pleasant, allowing for enjoyable hiking conditions. The longer daylight hours provide ample time to explore the area and fully appreciate the beauty of Fern and Shadow Falls.

Early fall: is another favorable time to visit. The weather is mild, and the changing colors of the foliage create a stunning backdrop, adding a touch of autumnal beauty to the surroundings.

Winter: The road leading to Fern and Shadow Falls is closed during the winter. The road becomes inaccessible due to snow and ice.

Hiking Fern and Shadow Falls

The hike to Fern and Shadow Falls in the Idaho Panhandle National Forest is a family-friendly and accessible adventure that showcases the natural beauty of the area. This trail offers hikers the opportunity to witness the splendor of two magnificent waterfalls: Fern Falls and Shadow Falls.

Fern Falls

The hike begins with a short and leisurely stroll along a wide and easy trail, which leads hikers to Fern Falls, the first of the two waterfalls after a mere quarter-mile walk. The proximity of Fern Falls to the parking lot allows for a convenient and enjoyable experience, making it an ideal first stop on the hike.

Shadow Falls

Continuing on to Shadow Falls, cross the footbridge, and follow the trail next to yellow dog creek. The trail takes a right turn at a switchback, signaling the start of an uphill climb. As hikers ascend the flank of the mountain, the ascent spans approximately half a mile.

After this short climb, the trail leads adventurers deeper into the forest, where they will discover the hidden gem of Shadow Falls. Tucked away upstream amidst a lush forest setting, Shadow Falls reveals itself as a magnificent cascade standing at an impressive height of 25 feet. The moss-covered rocks surrounding Shadow Falls added an ethereal touch that I absolutely loved.

If you’re feeling adventurous and want to take your waterfall experience to the next level, you have the option to hike up on either side of the Shadow Falls. We ventured around before heading back to the parking lot. It was a short and sweet hike but it had a huge reward.

What to Pack

Bug spray: The area around the falls can be mosquito-heavy, especially during the warmer months. Packing insect repellent will help protect you from pesky bug bites and allow you to fully enjoy the hike without constant buzzing around you.

Bear spray: As the Coeur d’Alene Mountains in the Idaho Panhandle are home to grizzly bears, it’s crucial to carry bear spray for your safety. Familiarize yourself with proper usage techniques before the hike and ensure it is easily accessible in case of an encounter.

Layers: Despite it being summer, it’s important to pack layers of clothing. The falls are situated deep within the forest, and the shaded areas can feel cooler than expected. Wearing a tank top left me feeling a bit chilly, so bring along a lightweight jacket or long-sleeved shirt to layer up if needed.

Camera: The beauty of Fern and Shadow Falls deserves to be captured and cherished. Don’t forget to pack your camera to capture the stunning scenery of Idaho.

Hiking shoes: Given the nature of the trail and potential uneven terrain, it’s crucial to wear sturdy and comfortable hiking shoes. Opt for shoes with good traction to navigate the trails with ease.

Backpack: Carry all your essentials in a backpack that fits comfortably on your shoulders. It will allow you to have your hands free and store items like water, snacks, extra layers, and your camera securely.

Trail map or guidebook: Since cell service is limited, having a physical trail map or guidebook is a wise idea. It can provide you with a better understanding of the trail, landmarks, and any potential points of interest along the way.
