A few years ago, my husband and I decided to embark on a summer adventure to explore Southwest Colorado, and of course, Crested Butte was on our list.
Over the years, I had heard so much about this place that my curiosity was off the charts. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint.
The mountains were more majestic than I ever could have imagined, and after spending a month exploring this charming mountain town, it stole our hearts.
I mean, who wouldn’t want to check out this winter wonderland that attracts skiers and snowboarders from all over the world? But here’s the kicker—we went during the summer, and it was a whole new world of adventure!
While it’s true that Crested Butte is known for its world-class skiing, there’s way more to explore here than just the slopes.
Did you know, Crested Butte has some of the best hiking trails and many incredible outdoor adventure activities to do in the summer?
It’s a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. You name it, they’ve got it—from hiking and mountain biking to paddleboarding and fishing, the list goes on and on.
Trust us, Crested Butte will quickly become your new favorite getaway spot!

First of all, Where Exactly is Crested Butte, Colorado?
Sitting at 8,885 feet above sea level, the town of Crested Butte was founded by mining settlers back in 1880.
For years, Crested Butte has captivated visitors by maintaining it’s authentic old- town feel with tons of charm and character seen through the historic buildings downtown Elk Avenue.
Directions from Denver to Crested Butte
There are three routes you can take, but the best route from Denver to Crested Butte is to take 285 South towards Gunnison. Once in Gunnison head North on State Highway 135 into Crested Butte which will only be a 30 minute drive.

Wondering, what is there to do in Crested Butte in the summer? Crested Butte is the perfect place for a family vacation, with plenty of attractions and activities, it’s hard to know where to start when planning this summer’s trip!
Luckily, when we visited, we did an extensive amount of locals’ favorite things and documented it in this easy to read guide that will help you have a great time no matter what your outdoor interest may be!
1. Spend the Day at Irwin Lake
Lake Irwin is a serene and beautiful place to spend the day on your kayak or paddleboard- nestled in the mountains right outside of town. This picturesque lake sits at 10,200 feet with gorgeous views of the Ruby Mountain Range.
We had so much fun paddling around the lake, taking in the views of the snow capped mountains. This lake is well protected from the wind making it an enjoyable way to spend the day when visiting crested butte in the summer.
You can rent paddle boards from Float-Shak Paddle Board Rentals or Wheelies and Waves Adventure Company.
2. Go on a Hike in Crested Butte

Best Family Friendly Hikes in Crested Butte
Woods Walk
Woods Walk is a scenic trail that can be enjoyed by anyone and features plenty of scenic views! The trail is just 2.9 miles round-trip with no steep climbs, making it easy for the whole family.
We started the hike on Kebler Pass road and it took us through a beautiful aspen grove forest, lined with wildflowers and amazing views of Mt. Crested Butte downtown crested butte. If you need to get acclimated to the elevation, this is a great short hike to start with as you get used to the elevation.
Judd Falls
Judd Falls is a beautiful waterfall located in Gunnison National Forest just 6 miles north of Mount Crested Butte, past the town of Gothic.
This waterfall is a short 2.2 mile hike but you can extend your hike 5 miles past the waterfall on Copper Creek trail to see the backside to Maroon Bells and make your way to Copper Lake.

Mt. Crested Butte
Ride the Silver Queen Express to experience an amazing hike up Mt. Crested Butte, which is 12,162 feet tall! The trail ascends and gains over 1,200 ft of elevation. Book a ride on the chairlift in advance. Check online to see when the chairlift is scheduled to open.
Scarp Ridge Trail
My favorite hike we did when visiting Crested Butte was Scarp Ridge Trail. And it’s one heck of a hike! But, if you’re up for a challenge and ready to explore the rugged beauty of the Rockies, this is the hike for you.
Let’s be real, the Scarp Ridge Trail isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s rated as difficult for a reason – steep inclines, rocky terrain, and a whopping 11 miles to conquer. But hey, no pain, no gain, right? And trust me, the view from the top is worth every grueling step.
One of the reasons why this hike was my favorite is how deep into the mountains we got. We were completely immersed in nature – surrounded by trees, wildflowers, and the occasional wildlife sighting. It was like stepping into a postcard from National Geographic.

Green Lake via Carbon Trail
Enjoy a scenic day hike to Green Lake, a beautiful mountain lake near Crested Butte that is only 4.9 miles from the Carbon Trail. The trail leads out and back to Green Lake at the base of Mount Axtell.
This hike is definitely on our bucket list because there was still a TON of snow in the high country when we visited. But we could see the lake from our hike to Scarp Ridge so that was a nice addition
What to Pack for a Hike in Crested Butte
Summer is the perfect time to visit Crested Butte, Colorado. To make sure you have a great vacation, prepared for any adventure that may come your way- pack this essential gear in your backpack.
- Hat + Sunscreen: Crested Butte is nearly 9,000 ft in elevation. Make sure you bring a hat and sunscreen.
- Water bottle: It’s important to bring water on these high altitude hikes. Bring 1 liter for every person.
- Hiking Boots: Comfortable hiking boots make a huge difference on the trail.
- Bug Spray: nothing ruins an outdoor experience quite like itchy bug bites. Don’t get bitten and bring your bug spray.
- Layers: The weather can change quickly in Colorado, bring extra layers.
- Camera: Be sure to document Crested Buttes incredible scenery.

7. Drive the Paradise Divide Loop
So you’re thinking of taking a drive through Colorado’s backcountry, huh? Look no further than the Paradise Divide Loop, a scenic drive that offers stunning views of wildflowers, alpine lakes, and jagged peaks.
Jake and I were looking for an adventure and decided to take this 26-mile route through the mountains, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint.
The drive takes you 11,250 feet above sea level, giving you stunning views of the surrounding area. But just when you think it can’t get any better, you descend into the Schofield Pass and are met with the most awe-inspiring landscape views of snow-capped mountains.
Now, I have to warn you, the road can get pretty steep and narrow, and at times it becomes a shelf road without any guardrails. So if you’re afraid of heights, this might not be the best route for you.
But if you’re up for the adventure, the Paradise Divide loop is an absolute must-see. Just make sure to bring a camera to capture all the jaw-dropping views along the way.
8. Visit Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory
The Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory is a high-altitude biological field station located in the mountains of Colorado that welcomes visitors.
The laboratory works to create an atmosphere of discovery, collaboration, mentorship and education for students from all around the world who come here to study nature through empirical research methods.
The lab has been operating since 1908 and it’s considered one of America’s oldest laboratories dedicated solely to biology.
The Visitor Center staff will be offering daily tours for those interested in learning about their new atmospheric research project coming to RMBL this summer!
9. Spend the Day at Emerald Lake
If you’re looking for a secluded, scenic place to paddle with alpine views in the area, then Emerald Lake is definitely one of those places. The water has an emerald hue that reflects off its towering mountainside making it very hard not to drool over how beautiful this spot is!
Just 15 miles from downtown Crested butte, this hidden gem is a must-see destination. Bring a picnic lunch, then take a dip in this gorgeous lake on your next visit to Colorado’s high country.
10. Go on a Mountain Bike Ride
Crested Butte has been drawing in tourists with its natural beauty, cinematic landscapes and the opportunity to enjoy many outdoor summer activities. But one type of activity seems to dominate Gunnison Valley: Mountain Biking!
Crested Butte has some of the best mountain biking trails in the country, with over 750 miles of singletrack to explore.
For beginners, try the Lower Loop Trail and Upper Lower Loop Trail, just a short drive from town with great views of downtown.
For more advanced riders, the Snodgrass Trail is a must-try. You’ll be rewarded with incredible views of the maroon bells as you ride this challenging, yet rewarding mountain bike trail.
Need to rent a bike? The Alpineer is the perfect place with a wide variety for every type of rider and terrain.
For less than $50, for a half-day rental they give you use of their excellent bikes and helmets before sending you on your way to the trail!
11. Learn Some Fascinating History at the Museum
Crested Butte was once home to an entirely different community.
Long before the scenic town became known for its alpine skiing and biking trails, Crested Butte town housed miners who made their living in dangerous conditions deep below ground level.
The history of these people are preserved by the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum that locals love so dearly.
12. Explore Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
If you’re looking for jaw-dropping natural beauty, then you’ve got to check out the Black Canyon at Gunnison National Park. This place is home to some of the most awe-inspiring cliffs and rock formations you’ll ever lay your eyes on.
The Black Canyon is not your average canyon. It’s deep, dark, and mysterious, with sheer cliffs that drop more than 2,000 feet down to the Gunnison River.
It’s the kind of place that makes you feel small and insignificant, but also incredibly grateful to be alive and witness such natural wonders.
Now, when it comes to hiking trails, there are plenty to choose from in this park.
If you’re up for a challenge, you might want to check out the Rim Rock Trail. It’s a bit of a doozy, but the views from the top are absolutely worth it.
And if you’re looking for something a bit more moderate, the Oak Flat Loop Trail is a great choice. It’s a nice easy stroll through some beautiful scenery, and it’s only a couple hours from Crested Butte either, which is a real bonus.
13. Horseback Ride in the Colorado Mountains

Tips for Traveling to Crested Butte
- Drink Lots of Water: Crested Butte is located at nearly 9,000 ft above sea level – which is much higher than the average elevation in Colorado. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids before any outdoor activity.
- Altitude Sickness is a Real Thing: If you are visiting from low elevations, like sea level, it’s important that you spend some time getting used to the altitude to let your body adjust before setting out on any strenuous activity or hike. Be aware of the effects of altitude sickness.
- The Sun is Stronger at Such a High Altitude: The sun is twice as strong at high colorado altitudes. This means the UV rays are higher giving you a shorter amount of time before you get burnt. Wear your sunscreen!
